I was really happy when Chrysalis Records asked me to shoot the cover for the first Generation X album cover and Billy Idol, Tony James, Mark Laff and Bob Andrews were great subjects - they looked terrific, worked really well together and embodied the late 70s perfectly

The Jam had already made a powerful impression with their first album "In the City" released earlier in 1977 and I was thrilled when my good friend Bill Smith asked me to shoot the cover for their second album "This is the Modern World" which we did underneath the Westway in West London

Shaking Stevens had just had a huge London West End stage success playing Elvis Presley in the Jack Good musical "Elvis" and for the sleeve of his first solo album the record company wanted me to try and create a 50s Elvis vibe......

I had known Paul McCartney since the 60s and had photographed him informally at a recording studio in 67, so I was extremely flattered when he asked me to shoot with his band Wings for the 1980 Wings Over Japan tour program at a South Coast theatre they had hired for rehearsals. We had a great day together and I shot a load of material which everyone seemed delighted with, but on arrival in Japan Paul was immediately busted and the tour was cancelled!

Gerard had a monster hit with his song "New York, New York (so good they named it twice)" and we got together to create a range of images illustrating each song on his first album "Made It Thru the Rain" with the intention of including a booklet with the album containing all the lyrics illustrated with my photographs. Unfortunately the record company decided it was too expensive but did go ahead with a gate-fold sleeve and put the lyrics and the images in that.

Thieves were a 7 piece band of very talented session musicians that Nicky Chinn & Mike Chapman brought together for an album project. They brought me in to create the images and sent us all down to the Yucatan in Mexico for an extended shoot - this was the centre spread of the gate-fold sleeve

Meeting Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart through working with their band The Tourists and shooting the cover for their outstanding second album "Reality Effect" was a wonderful way to bring the 70s to a close and move into the 80s - the idea was to create a "painting with numbers" effect, but unkown to me two of the band had taken acid and it kicked in as they started to paint the set and chaos reigned but the result was far more interesting than the original concept....
