Charlie on tambourine - can't remember the track!
It was when we all emerged from the studio after an all-nighter one morning that I realised it would be a great time to shoot a session, as the band looked so wasted and perfectly Stones like!
I suggested that we take the band to Primrose Hill in the North of London for a shoot after an all-nighter in the recording studio
The original transparency that was used on the Between the Buttons cover was lost at the time, probably disposed of by the record company!
I only had around 30 good minutes with the band before they started to be overcome by the cold and tiredness
I shot one roll of black & white for press and promotion but otherwise shot colour
This is one of the few Vintage contact sheets from the mid-60s period
Brian was being a bit erratic and turning away from the camera and not really paying attention, but Andrew told me that it didn't matter what he did as it would all enhance the Stones image
I moved the band around as much as possible in the short time we had as I knew that they wouldn't tolerate the cold for too long
After about 30 minutes it became obvious that the guys were running out of steam
Brian had brought a morning newspaper and seemed more interested in the news
These were my last shots with the band in the 60s - things were terribly tense and they were all pretty wasted most of the time
Mick was arriving later and later and was surprisingly aggressive - the tension between the band and Andrew was really unpleasant
Even Charlie, who I had been particularly close to was distant
Keith was still posing for me but it was clear that the band were building up to a confrontation with Andrew
Communication was almost non-existent and as the tension draw to a climax I realised that my days with the band were over
As upsetting as the atmosphere was Keith always looked cool
